Things to Do around Us

Castel Sant'Angelo

Emperor Hadrian constructed Castel Sant'Angelo (then known as Mausoleum of Hadrian) as a burial chamber for himself and his family. It was later used both as a fortress to house dangerous criminals, and a refuge for the Pope in times of war. Today the circular structure houses a museum containing various exhibits about the building's design and history, including strong boxes used to hold the church's vast treasure in days of persecution.
