Things to Do around Us
Syracuse, a place where, in a year-long summer, you can see Greek remains and monuments from the Roman period, Arab and Jewish sites, and baroque-style buildings. It is a place where history is waiting for you, to let you taste Mediterranean flavours and imagery.
Aretusa Vacanze is just a few steps from Arethusa's Fountain and Piazza Duomo. The Cathedral lies on this wonderful square, the heart of the island of Ortigia, in the highest spot, and encloses all the history of the city. It is the fruit of a magnificent blend of styles and cultures that followed throughout the centuries.
You can visit the Archeological Park: the Greek Theatre and the Ear of Dionysius. In the 5th century BC the site was already provided with a theatre of moderate dimensions. It was probably the place where “The Persians”, a work by Aeschylus, was performed for the first time.
The Ear of Dionysius is the most mysterious monument in Syracuse. It is an artificial grotto measuring 65 m long and 23 m high, whose name was given by Caravaggio in 1608. According to the great painter, the tyrant Dionysius had his political prisoners enclosed there so that he could secretly listen to their speeches from a cavity located in the upper part of the cave taking advantage of the extraordinary acoustics of the grotto.
You can also enjoy the beautiful sun of Sicily taking sun in the near solarium...or live the night in the pubs all around ortigia!
