Things to Do around Us

Seville restaurants provide an enjoyable place to dine in the city, with some delicious food available. When dining in Seville restaurants, tavernas, cafés and bars, the food is based on a combination of fresh produce and home cooking, with the result being quite delicious.

The city of Seville is ideally placed for the freshest seafood and fish. High quality Spanish fruit and vegetables are also readily available, and so restaurants in Seville are able to obtain a wonderful array of fresh ingredients when preparing their meals.

Seville Breakfast
Breakfast in Spain tends to be eaten twice and Seville is no exception. The first breakfast is usually a light meal, such as toasted bread with butter, jam or olive oil, together with a milky coffee (café con leche). A little later, sometime between 10:00 and 11:00, a more substantial breakfast follows, usually in a café. This often consists of a sandwich (bocadillo) or muffin (mollete), with either ham, cheese, sausage or a slice of traditional Spanish omelette. Churros are also popular for breakfast in Seville and these are simply fried dough strips, sold mainly from stalls around Seville city centre.

Seville Lunch / Tapas Bars
Lunch in Seville starts from 13:00 onwards, usually with tapas. These are bite-sized snacks that accompany drinks and they are a real part of Spanish culture and very popular in the city. The tapas bars (tascas) can become very busy and they usually have plenty of atmosphere. Tapas started in the 18th century when Carlos III asked for his wine to be covered with a plate of food, to stop the dust from getting into it - 'tapa' literally means 'lid', which is where the name comes from. These days, the most common types of tapas include snails, deep-fried squid, mushrooms, baby eels, tripe, prawns, cold potato omelette, meatballs, potato salad, olives, cheeses, cold meats and tortillas. A meal in a tapas bar or café in Seville is a very social way to enjoy and share a large variety of food and different tastes.

Lunch in Seville is eaten between 14:00 to 15:00 and is usually followed by an afternoon siesta. A typical lunch menu in a Seville restaurant might consist of tortilla de patatas (a traditional Spanish potato omelette), Cazuela de Arroz con Mariscos (a version of seafood paella), pollo al ajillo (chicken in olive oil and garlic), pesca'ito frito (fried fish), many salads and perhaps gazpacho (a traditional Andalusian cold soup made from tomatoes).

From 17:30 onwards, Seville cafés, tea rooms and pastry shops begin to fill up for pastries, cakes and sandwiches, and tapas bars also start to become busy. A little later, at around 21:00, Seville restaurants begin serving supper, although some restaurants in Seville may open a little earlier for tourists. The restaurants may stay open until after midnight and many locals in Seville enjoy dining out in restaurants on a regularly basis, particularly on Sundays.

Seville’s main shopping zone is in Centro around Calles Sierpes, Tetuán, Velásquez, Cuna and Plaza del Duque. This busy area is the place to come for clothes, be it modern Spanish gear or essential Seville Feria fashion; shawls, flamenca dresses, mantillas, ornamental combs, castanets and fans.

Head to the Alameda de Hércules area for more offbeat shopping, either in the area’s lively markets or the smaller shops along Calles Amor de Díos, Jesús del Gran Poder or Trajano. If it’s gorgeous ceramics you’re after, Triana is the place to go; there are dozens of attractively decorated shops. Most of these shops are used to tourists and can arrange reasonably priced secure international delivery. If you’re not an EU resident, remember to pick up an IVA-exemption form; you can get this sales tax refunded at the airport when you leave.

Shops are generally open Monday-Friday 1000-1400, 1700-2030 and Saturday 1000-1400. During Semana Santa, virtually nothing opens on the Thursday, Friday, or Sunday, and many shops are shut the whole week.

Seville is great for going out due to the huge variety of venues in a small area. You can easily visit four or five completely different bars without walking more than ten minutes between any of them. The main areas are: Alfalfa, where Pérez Galdós gets so packed with people on Friday and Saturday nights that cars can't drive down it; Alameda, which has a more alternative scene, with lots of gay bars and clubs; and calle Betis by the river in Triana, which is wall-to-wall with venues, from quiet bars to all-night clubs.

In the summer, when the temperature is still in the 30s at night, there's a big bar scene along the river, on Calle Betis in Triana and Arjona and Torneo on the other side, as well as outdoor bars in the some of the parks. Clubbing moves to the Isla de la Cartuja, where young people throng the many seasonal outdoor venues. A cubano (double measure of spirit with mixer) will normally set you back between 4 and 5 euros, while a small glass of beer (cana) is about 1 euro. Red wine (tinto) is reliable, often Rioja, and costs about 1.50 to 2 euros a glass, while the white (blanco) is usually sweet and not to English taste.

Friday and Saturday nights are the big ones, with people generally venturing out at about 11 or 12pm and staying out till 5am or later.
